Casa del Pocito in Yucatan

The Magic of Yucatan
Yucatan contains one of Mexico’s most picturesque cities—its capital, Merida, named after Spain’s white-stone Roman city of the same name. Merida is a Mexico that clings to its past. It embraces intriguing prehistoric archaeological sites and an ancient history well displayed in its fine museums. Come and bathe in the light of this antiquity, climb old stone pyramids or study the elegant architecture of the colonial mansions, sit in the shady plazas and listen to marimbas near the domed churches throughout the historic center of Merida.

Explore the fringes of Merida and discover other layers of the Yucatan. Easy day trips include the ruins of Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Dzibilchaltun - each site offers its own unique view into a mystical Mayan culture. The uncrowded beaches of Celestun and Progreso; the beautiful colonial town of Izamal with its egg yoke-colored buildings; small villages like Ticul, rich with crafts, and exploring the restored haciendas of Temozon, Xcanatun and Yaxcopoil are excursions well within a half a tank of petrol from Casa Pocito.

If the urge to leave your Merida townhouse calls, driving in any direction from Merida promises to be an adventure.

Location...location...location
One of Casa Pocito’s most enviable features is its prized location on a small street with no bus traffic. It is rare in bustling Merida to experience the quiet and tranquility of a local neighborhood and still be near the epicenter of the Hictorico Centro. The principle plaza is a 7 block walk from the front door. Parque Santa Ana with it’s fine church and diminutive fresh produce market is 3 blocks from Pocito.

Colorful local markets, museums, the Zocalo, the busy cafes and Pasejo Montejo are all just blocks from the house.

Taxis are generally plentiful at the Parque Santa Ana to take you to more distant places. Day trips to beaches (45 minutes), important Mayan archaeological sites (1½ – 2 hours) and the restored haciendas that dot the countryside are easy to organize.

Arriving

By Air...
Merida (MID) has a modern Airport, just 5 miles from the city center.   There are direct flights from Mexico City, Monterrey and Houston. Flights into Cancun (CUN) from many U.S. cities are frequent and priced more competitively than flying into Merida's airport. The drive from Cancun to Merida is about 3 1/2 hours via the toll road. [Car rentals are also more competitively priced at the Cancun airport versus Merida.]

Once you're there...

Casa Pocito is located 20 minutes from Merida's international airport. Once you exit the airport terminal, "Transporte Terrestre" will assist you with a taxi. The cost for up to 3 persons is about $120 pesos ($12 USD).

Two essential short walks from Casa Pocito:

Paseo Montejo
The stately mansions of Paseo Montejo, built in the late 1800s, have been converted into or given way to banks, hotels, and cafes. The broad boulevard is lined with dozens of monumental sculptures and stately mansions. From the foot of Paseo Montejo at Calle 49, walk its length to the Flag Monument and you can imagine Merida of another century. Today Paseo Montejo serves as the major artery that connects the historic downtown with the new expansions in the north.

Plaza de la Independencia – Zocalo
At seven in the evening Merida calls a truce with the heat of the day. The deafening squawk of the magpies announce the city’s second awakening as if on cue. They migrate to the carob trees and their voices fill the night air for 30 minutes. On weekends the first block is closed to traffic and 60th street is transformed under strings of multicolored lights. In these coolest hours of the day the streets then vibrate with life, music and dance well into the night.
